Piano Lessons in Dunedin
I'm Phil Hartshorn, and I've been teaching music privately, full-time, since 2007. Based in Kaikorai Valley, Dunedin, I offer personalised piano lessons for children, teenagers and adults, particularly beginners and developing players.
My piano teaching uses the Piano Adventures method, providing a structured approach to learning music through practical playing, traditional music notation, rhythm and technique.
My aim is to help students develop a strong musical foundation while discovering the enjoyment and satisfaction of playing the piano.
A Musical Approach to Learning Piano
My piano lessons focus on developing musical understanding alongside practical playing skills.
Using the Piano Adventures method books, students progressively develop their ability to read music, coordinate both hands, understand rhythm and develop good playing technique.
Music theory is integrated into practical lessons, helping students understand how music works rather than simply memorising pieces.
As students develop their skills and confidence, lessons can progress into Easy Blues Piano, exploring blues rhythms, chord patterns and musical expression. Both younger and adult students can begin improvising and soloing when they're ready, developing the confidence to explore their own musical ideas.
My aim is to help students become confident, creative and independent musicians.
Piano Lessons for Children, Teenagers and Adults
I welcome beginner and developing piano students of different ages. Lessons are tailored to each student's experience, interests and musical goals.
For younger children, I recommend beginning lessons once they can recognise and decode letters, words and numbers. These foundational skills help prepare children for reading traditional music notation.
Teenagers and adults are equally welcome, whether they're learning piano for the first time or returning to music after a break.
