Bass Lessons in Dunedin

I'm Phil Hartshorn, and I've been teaching music privately, full-time, since 2007. Based in Kaikorai Valley, Dunedin, I offer personalised bass guitar lessons for beginners and developing players, primarily on four-string electric bass.

My teaching combines practical playing skills with traditional music notation, rhythm, technique, music theory and improvisation.

Bass guitar plays an essential role in music, connecting rhythm and harmony. I help students understand that role while developing their timing, listening skills and ability to play confidently with other musicians.

A Modern Approach to Learning Bass

My bass lessons cover a broad range of modern musical styles, including rock, blues, jazz and pop.

Students learn traditional music notation alongside practical bass technique, scales, rhythm, harmony and improvisation. Music theory is integrated into practical lessons so students understand not just what they're playing, but why it works.

I encourage students to develop a strong sense of time, listen carefully and understand how bass lines support the music.

My aim is to develop confident, versatile and independent bass players.

Bass Lessons for Children, Teenagers and Adults

I welcome beginners and developing bass players of different ages. Lessons are tailored to each student's experience, interests and musical goals.

For younger children, I recommend beginning lessons once they can recognise and decode letters, words and numbers. These skills provide an important foundation for learning traditional music notation.

Teenagers and adults are welcome, whether they're learning bass for the first time or returning to music after a break.
