Guitar Lessons in Dunedin
Guitar tuition with Philip Hartshorn – Dunedin School of Music
I'm Phil Hartshorn, and I've been teaching music privately, full-time, since 2007. Based in Kaikorai Valley, Dunedin, I offer personalised acoustic and electric guitar lessons for children and adults, from complete beginners to more experienced players.
A Modern Approach to Learning Guitar
My guitar lessons take a modern approach, covering a wide range of musical styles, including rock, blues, jazz, pop and contemporary acoustic guitar.
Whether you're learning on an acoustic or electric guitar, lessons are tailored to your interests, experience and musical goals.
I teach traditional music notation, practical guitar technique, rhythm, chords, scales and improvisation. Music theory is integrated into lessons, helping students understand what they're playing and how music works.
My aim is to develop well-rounded musicians who can read music, play confidently, explore their own musical ideas and become independent guitarists.
Guitar Lessons for Children, Teenagers and Adults
I welcome students of all ages, from complete beginners to more experienced guitarists. Lessons are tailored to each student's age, ability, interests and musical goals.
For younger children, I recommend beginning guitar lessons once they have developed the ability to recognise and decode letters, words and numbers. These foundational literacy and numeracy skills help prepare children for learning to read traditional music notation and understanding the relationship between written music and the guitar.
Teenagers and adults are equally welcome, whether they're picking up a guitar for the first time, returning after a break or looking to develop their existing musical skills.
My aim is to make learning guitar an enjoyable, rewarding experience while building a strong foundation in musicianship.
