Drum Lessons in Dunedin
I'm Phil Hartshorn, and I've been teaching music privately, full-time, since 2007. Based in Kaikorai Valley, Dunedin, I offer personalised drum lessons for beginners and developing players.
My teaching combines practical drumming skills with traditional drum notation, rhythm, coordination, technique and musical understanding.
Learning drums involves much more than keeping a beat. I help students develop timing, listening skills and an understanding of how drums contribute to the music they're playing.
A Modern Approach to Learning Drums
My drum lessons cover a range of modern musical styles, including rock, pop, blues and jazz.
Students develop essential drumming skills, including stick control, coordination, rhythmic reading, grooves and fills.
Music theory and rhythmic understanding are integrated into practical lessons, helping students understand what they're playing and how different rhythms work together.
I encourage students to develop a strong sense of time, musical awareness and the confidence to play with other musicians.
My aim is to develop capable, creative and independent drummers.
Learning on an Electronic Drum Kit
Lessons take place on an electronic drum kit, providing a comfortable, volume-controlled environment for learning.
The built-in metronome is used to help students develop accurate timing, a steady pulse and rhythmic confidence.
Students learn traditional drum notation, stick control, coordination, grooves and fills. These fundamental skills provide a foundation for playing both electronic and acoustic drums.
Drum Lessons for Children, Teenagers and Adults
I welcome beginners and developing drummers of different ages. Lessons are tailored to each student's experience, interests and musical goals.
For younger children, I recommend beginning lessons once they can recognise and decode letters, words and numbers. These foundational skills help prepare children for reading traditional drum notation.
Teenagers and adults are equally welcome, whether they're learning drums for the first time, returning after a break or looking to improve their existing skills.
